Movement - Strafing

Ok, so strafing is probably one of the things in OA that are hardest to pick up on your own. If you play enough, you'll get better at aiming and learn maps etc, but not many just intuitively pick up strafing.

So, my goal here is not to get you strafing, but to just let you know what it's all about.

First place to start is this youtube video, "Genesis, the Beginning Of" where you will learn about god's love for us and the creation of the universe...

Naw, but you will get a very good explanation of what strafing is. The whole video is here:

The part about what stafing is starts here:

( 97 seconds into the above vid)

Ok, so if you watched that, you probably are very intimidated (well, I was anyway). Ok, now get more so with this sciency link! (Honestly, if you can just skim through that, it's helpful, but not necessary.

Ok, so anywhere, here is where I try to move the ball forward to get beginners started on this.

The first thing to realize is that the hopping you do keeps friction from affecting you. In the following video, I press 'forward' just once in the beginning, and for the rest of the time, I simply hop up each time I land and my speed stays constant.

NOTE THE VIDEO SAYS CG_DRAWSPEED SHOWS THE SPEED ON YOUR SCREEN, BUT YOU NEED TO TYPE "/CG_DRAWSPEED 1"... someday I'll fix it if it ends up mattering...

Now, the next thing to realize is that you always see these people doing left/right/left/right... strafing. This is not necessary, just practical. If you have the right space, you can strafe in the same direction over and over in a big circle. This video shows me doing that.

Ok, if you want to give this a try, you can open console, type /devmap pillcity then type /god then type /give all and you can rocket jump yourself out of the city walls and give it a try. You'll also want to type /cg_drawspeed so that you can see how fast you are going.
